The field-effect transistor (FET) was first conceived by physicist Julius Edgar Lilienfeld in 1926, however at that time, a functional device could not be built. Physicists John Bardeen, Walter Brattain, and William Shockley constructed the first functional device, a point-contact transistor in 1947.
