Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21, has refused to resign from his post. Before him, here are a few examples of leaders who have won polls while in jail and of others whose incarceration had an impact on the peformance of their parties.

Hemant Soren

Hemant Soren resigned as Jharkhand CM after more than seven hours of questioning by the ED in money laundering case and later arrested on January 31, 2024.

Lalu Prasad

Lalu Prasad, then CM of Bihar resigned as CM and was arrested by the CBI and spent 135 days in jail in connection with fodder scam case.

J Jayalalithaa

J Jayalalithaa resigned on December 1997, after the AIADMK had lost power in Tamil Nadu and was arrested by police in a connection with a case of alleged irregularities in the purchase of colour TVs for village panchayats.

M Karunanidhi

DMK stalwart and former Tamil Nadu CM M Karunanidhi was arrested in June 2001 in an alleged case of corruption, weeks after the AIADMK swept to power in the state.

Om Prakash Chautala

Five time Haryana CM Om Prakash Chautala has been behind bars since January 2013, after he was convicted in a teachers recruitment case followed by a disappropriate assests case.

B S Yediyurappa

Karanataka CM B S Yediyurappa was forced to resign in July 2011 after the state Lokayukta indicted him for allegedly profiteering from land deals in Bangalore and Shimoga, and in connection with the alleged illegal iron ore export scam in Bellery, Tumkur and Chitradurga districts.
