Lord Jagannaths Illness

Before the Rath Yatra, it is believed that Lord Jagannath falls ill and is placed in solitary confinement due to a fever. During this time, the darshan (viewing) of the deity is halted, and doctors are called to treat him.

The Reason Behind the Illness

Every year, Lord Jagannath, along with his sister Subhadra and brother Balram, is taken out of the sanctum on Jyeshtha Purnima and bathed with a thousand pots of cold water. This extensive bathing ritual is believed to cause the deity to fall ill with fever.

Solitary Confinement and Treatment

Following the bathing ritual, Lord Jagannath remains in a resting posture in his bedroom for 15 days. Similar to humans, he is treated in isolation with various medicines to aid his recovery.

Recovery and Rath Yatra Preparation

Once Lord Jagannath is fully recovered, he, along with Subhadra and Balram, embarks on the Rath Yatra. This marks the beginning of their journey to the Gundicha Temple, which is considered their aunts house.
