Chhattisgarh took the lead as the first state to announce the prohibition on the sale of alcohol on January 22. Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai made this decision last week. With the recent victory of the BJP in the state, the Chief Minister declared January 22 as a dry day throughout, enforcing a complete ban on the sale of alcohol, not just at retail shops but also in pubs, restaurants, and upscale clubs.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath stated that the day should be celebrated like a national festival, and there will also be a public holiday on the day for all educational institutions in the state. The sale of alcohol was also prohibited in Ayodhya on January 9 when the chief minister visited the temple town to review preparations for the consecration ceremony.

Jaipur, Rajasthan

Although Rajasthan, under BJP rule after the recent assembly election results, has not implemented any comprehensive ban, it has been decided that meat shops in Jaipur’s Municipal Corporation (JMC) Heritage area will be closed on January 22. While there have been calls from BJP leader Gopal Sharma to close liquor shops within the JMC’s boundaries, Mayor Munesh Gujjar rejected the proposal on technical grounds.

Maharashtra

Ruled by a coalition government of BJP, Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP group, the state has not announced a dry day on January 22, considering Mumbai’s urbane nature and the substantial revenue it garners. However, BJP leaders have been demanding prohibition on the sale of alcohol and meat anywhere in the state on January 22.
