    Lalduhomas political journey truly started in 1986 by forming the Mizo National Union, later merged with the Mizoram Peoples Conference, making him its working president.

Party Hopping and ZNP Formation

    He switched to the Mizo National Front (MNF) in 1997, but soon formed his own party, the Mizo National Front (Nationalist), later renamed Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP) that same year.

Electoral Success and Disqualification

    In 2003, he won his first MLA seat from Ratu. He became the Chief Ministerial candidate for the ZPM-led alliance in 2018, winning two seats (Aizawl West I and Serchhip) while ZPM gained seven, becoming the main opposition. However, the alliance lacked ECI recognition, forcing him to contest as an independent.

    After retiring from service, Lalduhoma entered politics founding the Zoram Peoples Movement party in 2017 and later was registered with the Election Commission of India in July 2019 as an alternative to Congress and MNF to give voice to regional aspirations in Mizoram.

    Lalduhoma persisted in state politics for decades, ultimately emerging as the Chief Ministerial face of the ZPM-led alliance in the high-stakes 2018 Assembly polls.

First anti-defection law MP case

    In a first, Lalduhoma also earned the dubious distinction of becoming the first Lok Sabha MP to be disqualified under the anti-defection law for resigning from Congress over dissent in 2020.

    Though disqualified as MLA in 2020, his political clout was reaffirmed with a strong bypoll win in 2021, cementing his position as Mizorams senior-most Opposition leader.
