Lok Sabha 2024: What are the Eligibility Criteria for an MP?
Article 84
Article 84 describes the qualification to become a member of the Parliament which consists of the President, the Lok Sabha, and the Rajya Sabha.
Citizenship Requirement
MPs must be Indian citizens who are at least 25 years old.
Registered Voters
For Lok Sabha membership only electors can be elected. Therefore, candidates must be registered voters in a parliamentary constituency and must be eligible to vote.
Independent Candidates
Independents require ten spokespeople supporting their nomination.
Nomination Rules
Candidates of recognized parties need one proposer from their constituency, while independents need ten spokespeople.
Security Deposit
All applicants must submit a 25,000 rupee security deposit.
No Convictions
Candidates cannot stand convicted of criminal offenses. In other words, No criminal case should be pending against him or should not be criminal or of unsound mind.
Financial Disclosure
MPs must fully disclose financial interests, assets, and liabilities.
Oath of Office
Newly elected Lok Sabha members take an oath of allegiance before taking seats.
