Five times roof collapses shook Indian Airports in recent years


Delhi airport

    During heavy rains in the national capital on Friday, a fatal roof collapse occurred at Delhi Airport, resulting in one fatality and injuring five others around 5 am. The incident also caused the cancellation of several flights. This is not the first such incident at an airport, as many others have been reported previously.

Politics over Delhi airport

    Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu faces his first challenge as the Union Civil Aviation Minister. The Opposition targeted Naidu and PM Modi after a portion of the roof outside Terminal-1 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi collapsed and killed a person. The opposition alleged that the expanded section of the Terminal was inaugurated by PM Modi.

Jabalpur airport

    The roof of Jabalpur airports new terminal collapsed Thursday due to heavy rain, crushing a car underneath. Luckily, no injuries occurred as the car was empty. The airport, renovated recently at a cost of Rs 450 crore, faced the incident despite its recent upgrades.

Guwahati airport

    In March 2024, heavy rain caused a roof collapse at Guwahatis Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. The incident led to rainwater pouring through the airports damaged ceiling.

Port Blair airport

    A portion of ceiling of Veer Savarkar International Airport in Andaman and Nicobar islands’ Port Blair collapsed due to strong winds in July 2023. This incident was reported days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the integrated terminal building.

Chennai airport

    Earlier in March 2018, the false ceiling collapsed at the check-in area of Chennai domestic airport terminal. Luckily, nobody was hurt in the incident and no disruption in services was reported
