    Chhath Puja is a Hindu festival mainly observed in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand. On this day, Sun God is worshiped with prayers and religious rituals.

When it will start this year?

    The auspicious festival begins 6 days after the Diwali festival. Chhath Puja lasts for 4 days. It is celebrated twice a year in the months of Chaitra and Kartika. This year, it will start from November 17 and will end on November 20, 2023.

Importance of Chhath Puja

    It is considered to be one of the most eco-friendly relgious festivals. On this day, people worship the Sun and thank him for the bountiful blessings he has bestowed on the earth.

History

    It is believed that Chhath Puja is in practice since Vedic ages. It is said that Karna, who was the son of the Sun and the king of Bhagalpur, Bihar, performed this puja. It is also said that the Sita was blessed with Luv and Kush after she did the Chhath Puja.

Rituals

    Chhath Puja is a folk festival that lasts four days. It starts with Kartik Shukla Chaturthi and ends with Kartik Shukla Saptami. Chhath is celebrated twice a year.

Day 1: Nahaay Khaay

    The first day of Chhath Puja is Nahaay Khaay where the Parvaitin (worshippers) takes a holy bath and makes Sattvik Lauki Bhaat. After offering it to the deity, the Parvaitin consumes it as their final meal.

Day 2: Kharna/ Lohanda

    On the second day, devotees are not permitted to drink even a drop of water. In the evening, they make Jaggery kheer and offer, eat and distribute it.

Day 3: Sandhya Arghya

    On the third day, people make Pakwan, Ladua and they offer it to the Sun as Arghya. The Arghya is offered at a riverbank or pond.

Day 4: Bihaniya Arghya

    The fourth and last day of Chhath Puja is same as the third day, except the arghya is offered to the rising Sun.

Prasad

    On the Chhath Puja, the prasad is offered to the Sun which is really special to Bihari people. It comprises of Thekua, Khajuria, Tikri, fruits, etc.

Importance of Orange sindoor

    Women apply long sindoor of orange colour. It is said that the life of womans husband who applies the sindoor is prolonged by the good grace of God.
