Ancient Treasure Discovery: In a remarkable turn of events, a diver's discovery of a metallic object off the shores of Sardinia has led to the retrieval of tens of thousands of ancient bronze coins.

The Italian culture ministry disclosed that the vigilant diver's observation prompted the mobilisation of divers from an art protection unit and the ministry's undersea archaeology division.

A Dive into History

The cache of coins, which dates back to the first half of the fourth century, was located nestled within a bed of seagrass near the northeastern coast of the Mediterranean island.

While the exact date of the initial sighting of the metallic object near Sardinia's shoreline close to the town of Arzachena has not been clarified, the discovery was reported by the Associated Press.

At this juncture, the exact count of the recovered coins remains indeterminate as they undergo sorting. The ministry has estimated that there are at least 30,000 coins, and potentially as many as 50,000, based on their collective weight, as per the Associated Press.

"All the coins were in an excellent and rare state of preservation," remarked the ministry, noting that even the few damaged coins still bore legible inscriptions.

A Momentous Discovery

Luigi La Rocca, an official from Sardinia's archaeology department, described the treasure found in the waters off Arzachena as one of the most significant coin discoveries in recent years.

In a statement, La Rocca emphasised that this discovery underscores "further evidence of the richness and significance of the archaeological heritage that the seabed of our seas, traversed by people and commodities since ancient times, continues to safeguard and preserve."

The search and recovery of the coins were facilitated by firefighter divers and border police divers.

As the ministry disclosed, the majority of the coins were situated within a vast expanse of sand lying between the submerged seagrass and the shoreline. Given the location and layout of the seabed, there is a possibility of shipwreck remnants in the vicinity, as indicated by the ministry.

This extraordinary discovery stands as a testament to the enduring mysteries that the seas of the ancient world still hold, safeguarding and preserving their rich historical heritage.
