A woman in Delhi has been sentenced six months of jail for not filing the income tax return on income of Rs 2 crores. The court has taken the action after a complaint was filed by the Income Tax Office (ITO) alleging that TDS (tax deducted at source) amounting Rs 2 lakh was deducted against the Rs 2 crore of income accessed in 2013-14, but no return of income was filed.According to the sources, the accused has been identified as Savitri who has been notified by the judge in the order noting, “The convict is awarded a sentence of simple imprisonment for six months with a fine of ₹5,000 and in default to undergo simple imprisonment for one month.”On the other hand, Savitri in her response said that she was uneducated widow without anyone to support her. However, the court has granted her 30 days of bail considering her application to challenge the court. The court said that the complainant was not able to prove beyond the reasonable doubt. Several notices were issued to accused but was failed the fulfill the obligation. The accused has been found guilty of not filing the return of income for the assessment year 2014-15 under Section 276CC of the Act, which is a punishable offence.
