There is a catch when it comes to getting free wine when you are in Italy. Customers at Verona's Al Condominio Italian restaurant receive a complimentary bottle of wine. Customers must give up their phones before their dinner, though, in order to qualify for the promotion. Owner Angelo Lella of the eatery opened it in March, according to a well-known Instagram handle. The city is in northern Italy. His goal was to get the diners who were visiting to talk to each other instead of staring at their phones. "Technology is becoming a problem—there is no need to look at your phone every five seconds,” the owner stated in an interview. They can set it aside and enjoy a nice glass of wine in this way.
As of right now, the Instagram post has received over 68,000 likes. In response to the post, a number of users have also commented, with one praising the owner for his efforts. He wrote, "A great gentleman, giving away expensive stuff just so the customer can enjoy their stay there." Someone else commented hilariously that he needed an owner like that in the office. He wrote, "Get this man in office ASAP."
One commenter stated that although she does not drink, she would gladly give up her phone in exchange for the free gift. "I am not a big drinker. I would gladly give up my phone if they offered me a free blunt," she remarked. As he wrote, "I do not drink wine, but that sounds like a terrific offer," another individual appeared to concur.
Angelo Lella went on to discuss the genesis of the concept. "Our goal was to establish a restaurant that stood out from the competition. We chose this structure because it allows customers to choose to forgo technology while spending time together in a convivial manner, as the owner was quoted on the page.
Free wine in exchange for taking a vacation from the internet appears to be a successful strategy for the eatery. According to Al Condominio, around 90% of visitors take advantage of this deal when they are there. "There has been a very nice reaction. Ninety percent of patrons have chosen to forgo using their phones in favor of wine. "Seeing people embrace it is just a great thing," the restaurant owner said in closing. It is thought that Al Condominio was the first eatery in the Veneto region to take up this novel idea. Still, there are other instances of eateries rewarding patrons who surrender their phones with coupons.
