As Ganesh Utsav celebrations are in full swing, Tinder, the popular dating app, has released a survey revealing a surprising trend among young singles in India. Instead of opting for traditional first date spots like cafes or movie theaters, a growing number of Gen Z singles are choosing festivals as their go-to destination for first in-person meetings. Festivals are now becoming the new dating hub, offering an environment that’s vibrant, fun, and low-pressure.
According to the survey, 43% of Gen Zs in India prefer cultural festivals for their first date, finding these events an ideal setting to break the ice. The festive atmosphere allows singles to connect more naturally, surrounded by excitement and celebration. Additionally, 30% of Gen Z participants reported actively seeking romantic connections during these cultural events, highlighting the festive season as a prime time for dating.
In Mumbai, where Ganesh Utsav is celebrated with great fervour, this trend is particularly evident. The survey revealed that 38% of Gen Z Mumbaikars believe that festivals and cultural gatherings are the perfect occasions to introduce a new match to friends or even family, making the experience less pressured. In fact, one in three young singles in Mumbai have used Tinder to find a date during these celebrations, blending tradition with modern dating culture.
Tinder's Matchmaker™ feature, which allows friends and family to suggest potential matches, has further enhanced the festive dating experience by adding a collaborative aspect to the dating process. This feature encourages singles to connect during festivals with the support of their loved ones.
Pratik, a 26-year-old Tinder user from Mumbai, shared his experience, “Ganesh Chaturthi has always been my favourite time of the year. I used Tinder during the festival and matched with someone who loved it as much as I did. We visited a pandal together, bonded over modaks, and had a great time without any pressure.”
