In the wake of the recent altercation at Chandigarh airport where Bharatiya Janata Party MP-elect Kangana Ranaut was slapped by CISF constable Kulwinder Kaur, public attention has shifted to an old statement by Ranaut. The actress had previously defended actor Will Smith for slapping comedian Chris Rock onstage at the 2022 Oscars, a stance that is now being revisited amid discussions about the CISF slap incident.
Kangana had commented on social media, "If some idiot used my mom or sister’s illness to make a bunch of fools laugh I would slap him like @willsmith did," punctuated with clapping emojis. She further added, "bada** move...hope he comes to my #lockup," accompanied by a laughing emoji.
The incident Kangana referred to involved Will Smith walking onstage during the 94th Academy Awards and slapping Chris Rock in response to a joke Rock made about Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Rock had quipped, "Jada, can't wait for GI Jane 2," alluding to Demi Moore's role in the 1997 movie "GI Jane," where Moore’s character had a shaved head. However, Jada had shaved her head due to alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder, making the joke particularly insensitive.
Following the altercation, Will Smith faced significant backlash and was banned from the Academy for ten years.
In the aftermath of the Chandigarh airport incident, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) took swift action, suspending constable Kulwinder Kaur on Thursday. The altercation has sparked widespread discussion and comparisons to the Oscars incident, highlighting the controversial nature of physical confrontations in response to perceived insults.
This incident underscores the ongoing debate about appropriate responses to offensive remarks and the repercussions of taking matters into one’s own hands.
