New Delhi: Noida is grappling with significant disruptions in its doorstep waste pickup services, leaving residents in several localities facing mounting waste accumulation and deteriorating hygiene conditions.

Waste management services in Noida see disruptions

Over the past few days, the routine waste management services, including doorstep waste pickup, have encountered disruptions. The local authorities cite that drivers of waste pickup vans and sanitary workers have failed to report to their duties due to unresolved disputes. While some sources suggest that the workers are demanding wage hikes, the exact cause of the disruptions remains unclear.

Residents across various sectors, including 20, 34, 51, 71, 19, 105, 122, and 104, have reported significant waste accumulation and deteriorating hygiene standards due to the disruption in waste management services. Despite assurances from the local body, normalcy has not yet returned, exacerbating the inconvenience faced by residents.

Piles of waste can't find dumpsters

Umesh Sharma, the RWA president of Sector 122, highlighted the plight of residents, stating, "The vehicles that collect wet and dry garbage have not been coming to Sector 122 for the past two days. Piles of waste are lying at residents’ doorsteps and roadsides." However, SP Singh, deputy GM of the public health department of Noida Authority, assured that efforts are underway to resolve the dispute among the drivers and resume regular waste collection services.

Is poor waste management a reoccuring plight for Noida residents?

Residents in various sectors, particularly Sector 51, have voiced long-standing concerns about poor waste management practices. Neglect of door-to-door waste pickup services exacerbates the situation, leading to waste accumulation in residential complexes and localities. Moreover, there are allegations of private waste management agencies exploiting the situation by demanding exorbitant fees for waste collection services.

As Noida residents continue to grapple with waste management challenges, urgent measures are required to address the disruptions and restore hygiene standards across the city. Authorities must prioritize resolving disputes and ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of essential waste management services to mitigate health and environmental risks.
