The internet recently buzzed with reactions after a man from Delhi posted a video of his unique take on a classic South Asian street food: mango momos. Traditionally filled with either meat or vegetables, momos are a cherished dish in South Asia. However, this Delhi-based vendor’s experiment using mango and a popular mango-flavored carbonated drink, Maaza, as primary ingredients sparked widespread controversy and disapproval.
In the video, the vendor begins by deep-frying pre-made momos. He then infuses the dish with a full bottle of Maaza, adding mango slices to a sauce before pouring in a generous amount of cream. Red chili powder is sprinkled over the mixture, and it is allowed to cook thoroughly. Finally, the momos are mixed into the Maaza sauce and garnished with additional cream.
The video quickly went viral, attracting a flurry of reactions from viewers. Critics argued that the combination of mango and Maaza clashed with the traditional essence of momos. Many expressed concerns over the health implications of incorporating a sugary drink into a savoury dish.
One user lamented, “Harpic dalna bhul gye” (Forgot to add Harpic, a cleaning product), while another warned, “Master chef m nahi jail zrur jaenge koi bimar hua toh” (The chef might end up in jail if someone gets sick). Another comment read, “Will not forgive this generation whoever even tastes it,” and a fourth user advised, “try mt kiya kro doctor se pucha kro” (Don’t try it, consult a doctor first).
