In a shocking turn of events, a mother from the US state of Alabama inadvertently ran over her seven-year-old son after punishing him by forcing him to walk home from school. The incident, which occurred in the city of Boaz, Alabama, has left the community stunned and authorities scrambling to understand the circumstances leading up to the tragic event.

Punishment Turned Tragedy

Sarai Rachel James, a 27-year-old resident of Alabama, picked her son up from school on February 9, only to discover that he had gotten into trouble earlier that day. Seeking to discipline him and set an example, James decided to punish her son by instructing him to walk home from school. Despite the distance being eight blocks, she deemed it a fitting consequence for his actions.

A Fateful Turn of Events

As the boy began his journey home on foot, tragedy struck in a moment of desperation. In an attempt to re-enter the car while it was in motion, the child grabbed hold of the car door, inadvertently placing himself in harm's way. In a split-second decision, James accelerated the vehicle, inadvertently pulling her son under the car and causing him to be run over by the back tyre.

Miraculous Escape

Thankfully, the child survived the harrowing ordeal with relatively minor injuries, primarily abrasions. Authorities from the Boaz police department noted that it was a miracle that the boy wasn't more severely hurt given the circumstances of the incident.

Unintentional Harm Leads to Charges

While investigators believe that the incident was accidental, James has been charged with aggravated child abuse in connection with the tragic event. She has since been released on a $50,000 bond. Additionally, a 53-year-old woman who was present in the car during the incident has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child and was released on a $500 bond.

A Family in Turmoil

As the investigation unfolds, James has been prohibited from contacting her son, who remains hospitalized. The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the unintended consequences of disciplinary actions, prompting a closer examination of parenting methods and the importance of ensuring child safety above all else.
