New Delhi: Catholic Answers, an advocacy group, has pulled the plug on its AI priest, previously known as Father Justin, following a brief but controversial stint. The chatbot, designed to engage with users on matters of faith, raised eyebrows with its unconventional responses, prompting the organization to swiftly remove it from service.

AI priest rebranded as Justin

The AI priest, rebranded as 'Justin' after the backlash, faced criticism after reportedly endorsing the baptism of babies in Gatorade, an unorthodox suggestion that sparked widespread disbelief. Despite initially asserting its authenticity, the AI's puzzling remarks left many questioning its credibility and the integrity of its responses.

Christopher Check, President of Catholic Answers, addressed the issue in a blog post, acknowledging the feedback received and announcing the organization's decision to transition to a new iteration of the AI app. The revamped version, featuring a lay character rather than a priestly persona, aims to provide users with a more reliable and credible interaction.

AI character now appears in business attire

Previously donning priestly attire, the AI character now appears in business attire, signaling a departure from its former association with the priesthood. In clarifying its role, 'Justin' emphasized that it has never held any official position within the Catholic Church and is merely a lay theologian dedicated to sharing the teachings of Catholicism.

As Catholic Answers navigates this technological endeavor, the organization remains committed to facilitating meaningful engagement with users while upholding the integrity of its mission to promote the beauty and understanding of the Catholic faith.
