An earthquake of 4.8 magnitude struck the New York and New Jersey areas on Friday morning, April 6. The U.S. Geological Survey said that the unprecedented earthquake shook the residents of the east coast.

The epicentre of the earthquake was located at Tewksbury in central New Jersey, 40 miles away from the city of New York. With a depth of 4.7 kilometres, it took place at 10:20 a.m. local time.

According to the USGS, a noticeable aftershock of magnitude 4 occurred at 5:59 p.m.

There was no massive destruction or loss of life; however, the earthquake was one of the strongest in history. "This is one of the largest earthquakes on the East Coast in the last century," New York Governor Kathy Hochul said at a news conference.

New York City officials have asked the residents to take shelter under furniture if they feel any aftershocks.
