A fresh image-creating feature by OpenAI the creators of ChatGPT has set the internet ablaze, with users worldwide sharing edited pictures, memes, jokes, stickers, and more. The feature is also getting quite popular simply because it is exceptionally well at generating Studio Ghibli-type pictures within seconds. What's all about the frenzy and what is actually Studio Ghibli?
Studio Ghibli is a Japanese-based animation studio that is renowned as one of the world's top studios in the industry. Studio Ghibli was established in 1985 by iconic directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata and producer Toshio Suzuki.
The studio has produced world-acclaimed animated films like Grave of the Fireflies (1988), My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Spirited Away (2001), and Howl's Moving Castle (2004). It has earned various accolades from across the globe, including two Oscar awards.
The image generation feature is available to users on the following version of ChatGPT: Plus, Pro, and Team. It is also available on OpenAI’s video model, Sora. The feature is not yet rolled out to users on the free tier. "Rollout to our free tier is unfortunately going to be delayed for a while," OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman stated. To create an AI-manipulated image, you simply need to upload a photo and ask ChatGPT to make it look like it was done in the style of Studio Ghibli. And ta-da! Your "Ghibli-fied" photo is ready to be shared on your profile.
Studio Ghibli has not made any official statement regarding the utilization of its art style by OpenAI yet. That said, Miyazaki did once reject AI-generated animation as an "insult to life itself." "I cannot sit and watch this and be fascinated by it. People who make such material do not know anything about pain. I am totally revolted. If one wants to make disturbing content, one can go ahead and do so, but I would never use this technology in my work," he had told an interviewer in 2016.
