Most of the time, when kids accidentally gulp down a non-edible object, it travels toward the stomach. In the best-case scenarios for these unfortunate events, it's small object that safely sees itself out in a day or two. But, in the worst-case scenarios, it can go down an entirely different path. One such case is being discussed a California teen underwent an emergency procedure after he accidentally swallowed a coin, which became lodged in his airway.
According to a report published in the English website Daily Star and the New England Journal of Medicine, a 14-year-old boy from California swallowed a coin for fun. The surprising thing in this case was that the coin did not get stuck in the esophagus but in the vocal cord. Due to which he started having a lot of difficulty in eating and drinking anything because when we eat something, it passes through the esophagus i.e. the food pipe and goes into our stomach. But this did not happen in this boy's case. Rather it went into the vocal cords.
According to the report, in the case of this child it happened that the coin got stuck in the cord as if the cord was the slot for the coin itself. When he reached the hospital, he told that he was having trouble swallowing and was unable to choke anything. When the doctor scanned it, he found that the coin was stuck in a very complex place in the vocal cord. The doctors were also very surprised to see this condition of the child.
After this, the doctors gave general anesthesia to the child and the stuck coin was removed. However, after a few hours of hard work, the doctors were successful in removing the child from the body and after a few days the child was discharged from the hospital. The doctor says that it was a difficult operation and if the coin was not removed from the child's body, he could have suffered serious respiratory disease.
