The Allahabad High Court's Lucknow bench has shown its displeasure with the state administration for defying the Supreme Court's orders to give school children in Uttar Pradesh a safe environment. The court stated that reading the correspondence demonstrates that no attempts have been taken locally to carry out the Supreme Court's directive.

According to the sources, Justice Alok Mathur and Justice BR Singh's bench said that a perusal of the correspondence between various departments of the state proves that no effort was made at the ground level to implement the directions issued by the Supreme Court on August 14, 2017, nor in the last five years. No exercise was done for more than a year.

Next hearing on April 5

Making the above observation, the bench directed the state to inform the court about the action taken by the state authorities to implement the order of the Supreme Court. This bench was hearing a PIL filed by ‘Gomti River Bank Residents Association’. The bench fixed April 5 as the date of next hearing in this case.

In its order, the court said that the Supreme Court has passed an order and created a three-phase framework to ensure a safe environment in schools. In this scheme, the District Education Officer has to work as the District Nodal Officer. The District Disaster Management Authority headed by the District Magistrate has to keep an eye on its work. After this, the Chief Secretary will scrutinize the work.
