Imagine strolling down the lane to see an elephant arround you! When an elephant wandered the streets of Butte, Montana, commuters in the United States were taken aback. According to NBC Montana, the elephant broke free from the constraints of a traveling circus. The Butte-Silver Bow Law Enforcement Department's Sheriff Ed Lester stated that the elephant was "spooked by a vehicle and momentarily escaped.
Videos and pictures from Butte depict the massive beast ambling along Harrison Avenue, casting shadows over passing vehicles. On one of the roadways, a man with a stick was observed frantically attempting to tame the elephant. In a another video, the cat is shown merrily crossing the street in a designated turning lane, but going the wrong way.
The animal rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals revealed that the animal had previously escaped in a similar manner in 2010 and 2014. Their spokesperson, Nicole Perreira, referred to Viola, the circus elephant that escaped, as "elderly." She is a member of the Jordan World Circus, a traveling circus. When Viola heard the sound of a car while taking a bath, she freaked out and ran away.
Circus workers placed the elephant into a trailer after it was seen strolling down the street for a few blocks," Sheriff Lester stated. Twenty minutes after Viola's escape, the handlers rounded her up. Lester said, "I am glad things ended well, and the show went on as scheduled as far as I know." There were no recorded damages or injuries.
"Viola's desperate break for freedom follows decades of abuse and involuntary servitude at the hands of Carson & Barnes Circus, which forces her to perform grueling, painful tricks and has been caught on video electroshocking elephants and beating them with a sharp, steel-tipped bullhook," according to a statement released by PETA, criticizing the event nonetheless.
