In a heartbreaking turn of events, a 31-year-old woman from Vijayapura, Karnataka, tragically passed away nearly a month after receiving an incorrect blood transfusion following the delivery of twins at the district hospital. The incident has sparked an investigation into the grievous error that led to her untimely demise.

Unveiling the Tragedy

Sharada Doddamani, a resident of Dadamatti village in Babaleshwar taluk, was admitted to the Vijayapura district hospital on February 23 for childbirth. However, due to heavy bleeding during delivery, medical staff administered B-positive blood instead of the required A-positive blood, exacerbating her condition. Promptly recognizing the severity of the situation, she was swiftly transferred to BLDE Hospital for further treatment.

Medical Complications and Tragic Outcome

Despite efforts to rectify the error, Sharada's health continued to deteriorate. While receiving treatment at BLDE Hospital, she developed viral pneumonia, with symptoms resembling those of Covid-19. Despite the medical team's diligent efforts to manage her condition, she tragically succumbed to the complications, leaving behind a grieving family and community.

Acknowledging the Mistake

District surgeon Dr Shivanand Mastiholi acknowledged the grave mistake in the blood transfusion process and assured a thorough investigation to uncover the truth behind the lapse in protocol. While clarifying that Sharada's demise was attributed to viral pneumonia rather than the blood transfusion error, he affirmed the hospital's commitment to providing free medical care under the Ayushman scheme.

Family's Response and Further Action

Despite the devastating loss, Sharada's family has refrained from lodging a formal complaint against the authorities. However, Dr Mastiholi has pledged to submit a comprehensive report to the commissioner of health, ensuring accountability and preventing such tragic incidents in the future.

As the community mourns the loss of Sharada Doddamani, her tragic ordeal serves as a poignant reminder of the critical importance of stringent medical protocols and patient safety measures. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death underscores the need for transparency, accountability, and continual improvement within the healthcare system to prevent similar tragedies from recurring.
