In a pioneering move for Indian education, a school in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, has introduced an AI teacher named Iris. Developed by Maker Labs, this robot teacher is based on generative AI and aims to revolutionize the learning landscape by pushing the boundaries of what's possible in education.

Iris was launched at Kerala’s KTCT Higher Secondary School, where the robot was inaugurated by Dr. K Rajeev, Director of the Space Physics Laboratory (SPL) of VSSC. A video shared on Instagram captures the momentous occasion, showing Iris interacting with students inside a classroom.

The company behind Iris expressed their vision for the AI teacher, stating, “With IRIS, we’ve set out to revolutionize education by harnessing the power of AI to create a truly personalized learning experience. By adapting to each student’s needs and preferences, IRIS empowers educators to deliver engaging and effective lessons like never before.”

What are the features of Iris?

Iris's versatility extends to its ability to move, interact, and answer students' questions, as reports claimed. Notably, there have been zero absentees in classes conducted by Iris, indicating the students' enthusiasm for this innovative teaching method.

The AI teacher covers subjects ranging from nursery to Class 12 and is currently equipped to communicate in three languages: English, Hindi, and Malayalam. Developers are also planning to expand its language capabilities to over 20 languages.

Moreover, Iris includes a safeguarding feature that enables it to block inappropriate content such as drugs and violence, ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment for students.
