New Delhi: A shocking incident unfolded in Russia where a professional chess player poisoned her opponent due to "personal hostility," according to local media reports. The 40-year-old chess player, Amina Abakarova, was caught on CCTV spilling mercury from a thermometer onto her rival's chessboard during the Chess Championship in Makhachkala.

Victim's health impacted

The victim, 30-year-old Umayganat Osmanova, fell ill after the tournament, experiencing "severe dizziness and nausea." This alarming turn of events led to a police investigation after a judge reported the incident. The CCTV footage clearly showed Abakarova committing the crime. She has since been detained and could face up to three years in jail if convicted.

Bizarre motive behind the crime

The motive behind Abakarova's actions has left many bewildered. Minister of Sport in Dagestan, Sazhida Sazhidova, expressed her disbelief: "Like many others, I am perplexed by what happened. The actions she took could have led to a most tragic outcome, threatening the lives of everyone present, including herself. Now she must answer for what she did by the law."

Abakarova admits to the crime

Abakarova later confessed to the crime, admitting that she tried to poison Osmanova out of spite after being defeated by her in a regional contest. She also accused Osmanova of making rude remarks about her and her relatives behind her back. Osmanova is now seeking the "maximum punishment" for Abakarova.

Abakarova faces charges of "intentional infliction of bodily harm." Friends of Abakarova are shocked, describing her alleged behavior as "completely out of character."
