The Delhi Police harassed photojournalists covering the Aam Aadmi Party protests on Tuesday. The tensions between the police and press intensified when photojournalists tried to take images of AAP leaders opposing Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's arrest.
According to the sources, one of the photojournalists suffered an elbow fracture during the altercation. While speaking to media house, the victim said that there was a lot of police presence and that they were acting inappropriately toward media representatives, even grabbing the collar of a fellow photojournalist.
In an attempt to file complaints over the incident, a union of photojournalists went to the Delhi police commissioner's office, but they were not allowed to see him. However, they have requested further time to discuss the situation with the commissioner.
Expressing shock over the incident, the Delhi Union of Journalists (DUJ), noted that the Delhi Police has previously targeted the media to stop them from covering protests. The media house in a statement said, “We implore the Union Home Ministry and the Election Commission to take appropriate action against the negligent police officials. We request that the media outlets make sure their photographers, writers, and other staff members who are on the ground covering protests and police actions are outfitted with protective gear.”
The DUJ also demanded adequate risk insurance for journalists and their equipment.
