New Zealand woman takes boyfriend to court over broken promise to drive her to airport

The woman faced expenses because her boyfriend didn't drive her to the airport, such as praying for last-minute travel, a shuttle, and kennel fees. She also asked him to repay her for a ferry ticket that she purchased for vacation. However, the tribunal decided that her claim of a verbal agreement wasn't enforceable since there was no intention for a legally binding commitment in their relationship.

New Delhi: Maintaing a romantic relationship can be challenging, especially when it comes to keeping promises, which are crucial for a healthy relationship. An intersting story has emerged from New Zealand wherein a woman took matters to court after her boyfriend failed to fulfill a verbal agreement to drive her to the airport. The incident has left many wondering how strange can relationships be.

Promise not fulfilled

According to The Guardian, a woman from New Zealand took her long-term boyfriend to a dispute tribunal claiming that he breached their verbal contract by not taking her to the airport. This caused her to miss a flight to a concert and forced her to postpone her travel by a day. She stated in front of the tribunal that they had been in a relationship for six and half years before this disagreement arose.

Woman misses the flight

According to a tribunal judgement released on Thursday, which did not disclose the woman's name, mentioned that she had plans to attend a concert with her friends. Her boyfriend had earlier agreed to drive her to the airport and look after her two dogs while she was away.

The day before her flight, she texted him, asking to be picked up between 10:00 and 10:15. However, he didn't arrive causing her to miss her flight.

What tribunal referee say?

“Partners, friends, and colleagues make social arrangements, but it is unlikely they can be legally enforced unless the parties perform some act that demonstrates an intention that they will be bound by their promises,” tribunal referee Krysia Cowie said.

“Although a promise was made, it falls short of being a contract. It forms part of the everyday family and domestic relationship agreements that are not enforceable in the disputes tribunal,” she added further.
