New AI Scam: In a concerning development, a new scam employing artificial intelligence to mimic voices has emerged. Kaveri, a user on social media platform X, recently shared her harrowing experience of falling victim to a deceptive call that nearly convinced her of her daughter's arrest.

Recalling the unsettling incident in a detailed post on X, Kaveri revealed that she received an unexpected call from an unfamiliar number, initially hesitant to answer. However, upon answering, she was greeted by someone claiming to be a police officer, who informed her about her daughter, K.

The fake cop spun a tale of K's supposed involvement in a blackmail scheme targeting a local politician's son, alongside three friends. Shocked and alarmed, Kaveri realized that the caller had meticulously replicated her daughter's name and voice, hinting at the utilization of advanced artificial intelligence technology.

Expressing her disbelief and fear on microblogging platform X, Kaveri recounted the moment of dread when she heard what seemed like her daughter's voice pleading for help. Despite the convincing nature of the call, Kaveri managed to maintain composure and requested to speak directly with her daughter.

Unfazed by the scammer's demands for money, Kaveri remained steadfast in her skepticism, insisting on authentic communication with her daughter. Frustrated by her resistance, the fake cop abruptly terminated the call.

Netizens share similar fraud cases

Kaveri's account struck a chord with many social media users, prompting a flood of responses recounting similar encounters. Stories emerged of individuals targeted by callers impersonating law enforcement, exploiting fear and deception to extort money or personal information.

Expressing concern and offering advice, users shared strategies such as using unique passwords and limiting online presence to safeguard against such scams. The alarming ease with which scammers accessed personal information and replicated voices using AI tools left many feeling vulnerable and unsettled.

One user recounted a similar experience involving a friend in Assam, while another shared how their mother had been targeted with threats about their brother's supposed arrest. Concerned users discussed strategies for protecting themselves from such scams, including using unique passwords and removing personal information from the internet.

As incidents of AI-driven scams continue to surface, vigilance and awareness remain crucial in safeguarding against exploitation and deception in an increasingly digital world.
