In an unexpected event onboard a flight from Jordan's Amman to London Luton Airport, a woman unexpectedly went into labor mid-air. The situation became urgent but thanks to the expertise of Dr. Hassan Khan, a doctor from Basildon Hospital in Essex, who helped to overcome the potentially precarious situation which turned into a miracle.

As it happened

About two hours into the flight, an emergency was declared as a passenger went into labor. Dr. Khan, who happened to be on the same flight, was called upon to lend his medical assistance. Rushing to the scene near the cockpit, he found a woman in active labor with her water already broken.

A safe arrival

With Dr. Khan's help, she successfully delivered a healthy baby girl mid-flight, marking a rare occurrence as only the 75th documented birth on a commercial aircraft. The plane was diverted to Brindisi Airport in southern Italy, where the mother and baby were taken to the hospital for further care.

Doctor overcomes language barrier

The language barrier posed a challenge during the delivery as the woman did not speak English. However, with the help of another passenger who acted as a translator, Dr. Khan managed to communicate effectively and provide reassurance.

Despite the lack of medical equipment onboard, Dr. Khan improvised using towels to ensure a safe delivery. His expertise in neonatal resuscitation played a crucial role in ensuring the well-being of both mother and baby, despite initial concerns about the baby's color.

Both mother and baby were reported to be in good condition after the delivery, bringing a sigh of relief to all involved. Dr. Khan expressed gratitude for the positive outcome and praised the support from the flight crew and passengers during the unexpected mid-air delivery.
