A beauty company is helping out the United States' egg shortage by retailing eggs at $3.37 a dozen. The Ordinary, a science-informed, no-nonsense beauty brand that has long been a cult favorite for its affordable but effective line of products, added more fans at the weekend by placing eggs for sale in a few New York City stores.
Avian flu outbreaks killed millions of US hens and caused an urgent shortage of eggs. On the social media scene, tens of thousands of frustrated consumers have bitched about being unable to find eggs on empty shelves at the local grocery. The cost of eggs has surged as well because of tight supplies. egg prices have nearly doubled since January to reach close to $5 a dozen now.
The Everyday responded to this problem with a publicity stunt that has won online acclaim. It partnered with art collective MSCHF to retail eggs for $3.37 a dozen over the weekend. The goal of the stunt? To provide New Yorkers with what they actually deserve - affordably priced eggs.
We learned NYC was in need of eggs. This weekend, 12 normally priced eggs at our stores are available for $3.37. No extras, just eggs. While supplies last," the brand posted in one of its Instagram promotions.
The offer was well received on social media, perhaps most of all because New Yorkers were just glad to have eggs at a price they could afford back in the stores. Consumers could purchase two cartons of eggs per person at select NYC stores. One LinkedIn user reported being "obsessed with" the egg stunt of the brand. Sam Stryker referred to it as "such a clever play on the name and positioning of the brand as a common sense alternative to other beauty choices.
