JNU gears up for students' Union Election on March 22 following a four-year gap

Amid continuous demand over for Students Union Election, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union is set to go under polls on March 22, after a gap of four years. The announcement was made by the poll election body on Sunday. The results for the same will be declared on March 24. 
Notably, the last elections in the university were held in September 2019.

According to the sources, a tentative voters list will be displayed on March 11 and the correction for the same will begin on March 12 between 9 am to 5 pm.
The Nomination Form will be issued between 2 pm to 5 pm on Thursday and the nominations can be filed between 9:30 am to 5 pm.
School-level General Body Meetings are scheduled from March 17 to March 19, while University-level General Body Meetings (UGBM) will commence on March 20 at 10 am. The election panel emphasizes the importance of correcting the voters' list well in advance before nominations.

In addition to the election proceedings, the committee has outlined plans for activities such as a presidential debate to encourage open communication among candidates. Various General Body Meetings (GBMs) will provide forums for discussion and debate on current topics. Shailendra Kumar, the committee head, underscores the significance of these gatherings in ensuring the integrity and transparency of the electoral process, fostering communication between candidates and voters.

Kumar urges students to actively participate in these activities, as they play a pivotal role in shaping the future direction of the school. He also notes that a comprehensive timetable for the GBMs will be made public after confirming the final applicant list.

The announcement of JNUSU elections came after sustained efforts by JNU SU and the united student community, prompting the JNU administration to release the first notification on January 28. The circular followed a memorandum submitted by JNU SU, leading to a University Strike on January 30 and a non-cooperation movement with the administration.

Following the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations, the student union elections are expected to be conducted within six to eight weeks from the start of the semester. The university seeks the cooperation of all students to ensure fair and orderly elections. 

The last JNU SU elections occurred over four years ago in September 2019, with a sweep of votes led by the united front of Left student organizations, including the Student Federation of India (SFI), All India Students Association (AISA), All India Students' Federation (AISF), and Democratic Students' Federation (DSF). Aishe Ghosh emerged as the JNU SU president, defeating the RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad.
