A heart wrenching incident has been reported from Karnataka’s Chitradurga where, a 24-year-old homemaker who has been identified as Ranjitha was found hanging at her residence. According to the sources, the authorities have found that the victim was in stress after her husband, Darshan Babu was found involved in cricket betting and lost Rs 1.5 crore as debt. Ranjitha was found hanging on March 18.

Police officials have found the suicide note in which the victim has explained how the family was harassed from moneylenders, which eventually led her to suicide. The officials have now registered a case against 13 people in connection with the case.

According to the sources, Darshan Babu’s father-in-law, while speaking to media said that he has paid back most of the borrowed money and only Rs 54 lakhs are left.

What led Darshan Babu to get involved in betting?

A year after being married to Ranjitha in 2021, Darshan Babu, an assistant engineer in the Hosadurga minor irrigation department, started betting. Darshan's father-in-law claims that the promise of financial benefit is what enticed him to wager on cricket.

Darshan was persuaded that bidding on IPL matches would be a simple and low-risk way for him to make money. Presumably in his late 20s, the engineer gave in to temptation and started placing bets on Indian Premier League (IPL) games. He increased his bets progressively after being successful at first.

Drawn in by the excitement of gambling, he was forced to take out loans at high interest rates, which resulted in debts that eventually above one crore.
