During the inspection supervised by Dr. Navin, the warden of Hostel 4, various hygiene violations came to light. Cockroaches were found in freezers containing vegetables and noodles, while some food items were observed to have deteriorated due to improper storage practices.
Students meticulously documented these findings and brought them to the attention of the administration, highlighting longstanding concerns regarding neglect of cleanliness standards in the canteens. In response, canteen operators defended themselves, citing years of service without such incidents and emphasising their efforts to maintain cleanliness and affordability.
Amidst growing discontent, students escalated the matter to the Department of Students Welfare (DSW), urging swift and decisive action against the canteen operators. They demanded immediate improvements in food quality and hygiene standards, vowing to keep the canteens closed until satisfactory measures were implemented.
The incident at Punjab University sheds light not only on cleanliness lapses in campus canteens but also underscores the pressing need for heightened accountability and transparency in managing academic facilities. As investigations continue and more concerning visuals from Punjab University canteens emerge, students remain resolute in their demand for a safer and healthier campus dining environment.
