Viral: A strange yet funny incident came from a Scottish tourist passing through Hyderabad who shared a video of an unusual experience with a local fruit seller. The latter asked for ₹100 for a banana, which sent the tourist, Hugh, and the internet into shock. He is known to have explored street food across Asia, and his video was put up on Instagram, which picked up within days and has gained over 6.4 million views.
Hugh, a Scottish traveler, has been going viral on Instagram for his honest reviews of street foods across Asia. He's tried India's most popular street food like vada pav, pav bhaji, and jalebis, so far. He had mostly amicable interactions with street vendors: they charged him fairly or gave him free samples. However, some of the vendors tried to overcharge him. One of those was the banana vendor in Hyderabad.
In the viral clip, Hugh is seen repeatedly asking the vendor to confirm the price, "Kitna?" (Hindi for "How much?"). Each time, the vendor quoted ₹100 for one banana. Amused and aware of the overcharge, Hugh decided to walk away without purchasing. The humorous yet eye-opening video sparked a wave of reactions, highlighting how some locals exploit tourists.
The comments section of the video turned into a funny joke and heartfelt apology. Some people started saying it was an attempt to "recover the Indian economy" or a "GST" (Gora Service Tax). A user said, "Chacha bhi like, now it's our turn to loot the goras." Others were just disappointed with the overcharging and wrote, "Sad to see this" and "Good job not buying.
This saga of ₹100 bananas was more than mere entertainment, since it threw up an occasion challenge to the visitor to some alien destination. Vast majorities offer authentic hospitality. Exceptions, as above, raise issues about fair trade and cross-cultural respect.
