The food safety and standard authority of India dismissed the manufacturing rights of a Pune-based ice cream manufacturer when a 26-year-old doctor in Mumbai found a human finger in an ice cream cone ordered online. He lodged a complaint at the Malad Police Station, which led to the action by FSSAI.

On June 12, Brendan Ferrao lodged a police complaint, and the case was made under sections 272, 273 and 336 of the Indian Penal Code against Yummo Ice Cream.

Steps taken by FSSAI

Inspection was conducted by the FSSAI at the facilities in Indapur and Hadaspur on Friday, and following that, the manufacturing license was temporarily suspended. The inspection lasted for almost 12 hours, and the notice is in the process of being issued.

The sellers’ premises were also thoroughly checked, and the state FDA checked the seller’s location. Various samples were collected to come to a concrete conclusion on how this incident occurred. The supply chain from the godown in Hadaspur to the house of the doctor was also traced thoroughly.

Company’s take

The management of the company claimed that ice cream was manufactured at Fortune Dairy Industries Pvt. Ltd. in Indapur, which is a third-party organization working with the company.

The company, YUMMO, has halted its product at any third-party premises for the time being, and the product has been kept aside for now.
