In a move that could shake up the AI landscape, Elon Musk announced plans to make xAI's ChatGPT challenger, 'Grok,' open-source. This decision comes shortly after Musk's legal battle with OpenAI over its shift to a for-profit model, diverging from its original mission.

Musk, known for his concerns about big tech profiting from AI, took to social media to reveal the upcoming release of Grok's code. This move aims to provide the public with free access to experiment with the technology, following the footsteps of Meta and Mistral, both proponents of open-source AI models.

The debate over open-sourcing AI has been fueled by tech investors like Vinod Khosla and Marc Andreessen. While open-source initiatives can accelerate innovation, there are concerns about misuse, including by malicious actors seeking to exploit AI for nefarious purposes.

Musk's vision for xAI aligns with his desire for transparency and safety in AI development. He aims to establish oversight mechanisms to address potential risks, highlighting the need for a 'third-party referee' to monitor AI advancements.

Elon Musk takes jibe on OpenAI

Elon Musk confirmed the speculation and wrote on his X account, "This week, xAI will open-source Grok". While a user replied to his post and asked if OpenAI should do the same, "OpenAI should do the same. If they are 'open' that is." Responding to the post he said, "OpenAI is a lie."

With the launch of xAI last year, Musk positioned it as a counterbalance to ClosedAI and Google, emphasizing the pursuit of 'maximum truth-seeking AI."' Grok, initially available to Premium+ subscribers, represents a step towards democratizing access to advanced AI technology.

Need for AI ethics and governance

Musks cleared his stance on open-source AI in a podcast discussion, where he criticized the shift of OpenAI towards closed-source models for profit. As Musk pushes for greater transparency and accessibility in AI, the release of Grok as open-source could be groundbreaking in AI ethics and governance.
