Driver admits to dozing off before fatal collision of ex-Intel head Avtar Saini

Tragedy struck on Wednesday morning as former Intel India country head Avtar Saini met with a fatal accident while cycling with fellow enthusiasts. The incident occurred on Palm Beach Road in Nerul, Navi Mumbai, leading to Saini's untimely demise. In a significant development, the driver of the cab involved has confessed to authorities, revealing that he lost control of the vehicle due to falling asleep at the wheel.

The collision took place at approximately 5:50 AM, as per the reports. Saini was cycling between Nerul Junction and the NRI-Seawoods signal when the cab, driven by Rishikesh Khade, struck him.

Despite immediate efforts to rush Saini to D.Y. Patil Hospital, he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Eyewitnesses, part of the amateur cyclist group accompanying Saini, described the horrifying scene as the cab collided with his bicycle from behind, causing him to skid and sustain severe injuries.

The impact was so intense that Saini's bicycle frame became trapped under the cab's front wheels, with the driver attempting to flee the scene while dragging the bicycle for a kilometer.

How did it happen?

During police questioning, Khade revealed that he had fallen asleep at the wheel after driving throughout the night, leading to the loss of control over the cab and the subsequent collision with the bicycle.

Khade will now face charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act. However, he has not been arrested, as the maximum imprisonment for the charges against him is less than seven years.
