Yoga is celebrated on June 21 every year. This was initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his address to the United Nations General Assembly. Since then, it has been celebrated every year, and its celebrations commenced from June 21, 2015, coinciding as the same day as summer solistice, the lonest day of the year.

Why yoga as a practice?

It has caught the attention of the world because this has made a lot of people realize how beneficial yoga can be for the body, mind, and soul altogether. It has helped Indians take pride in their own roots and opt for a way that leads to their holistic growth and development in the most natural and simple ways in the form of ‘aasnas’.

Theme for International Yoga Day 2024

The theme for the year 2024 is ‘Yoga for Self and Society.’ Yoga is not just a simple physical workout where you have to move your arms and legs in a particular manner; it is way more than a simple physical movement. It encompasses meditation, coordination with your breath, and, most importantly, it aims to build oneness with your body and soul.

Yoga as a movement internationally

The  sole purpose of building yoga as an international movement is to create a resilient body and mind and to make sure that the ancient practice reaches everyone’s home.

On June 21, PM Modi will celebrate International Yoga Day in Srinagar, on the banks of Dal Lake. An expected number of 3000–4000 people are expected to attend the event, which will be held at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC).
