A 20-year-old man in China underwent treatment for an unusual psychological condition known as delusional love disorder, where he firmly believed that all his female classmates were romantically interested in him. The situation escalated as he began displaying bold gestures of affection towards them, leading to concerns among his peers. Fortunately, after receiving medical intervention, he is now reported to be recovering.

Identification and Symptoms

The young man, identified as Liu from Jiangsu province in eastern China, first exhibited symptoms of the disorder in February, which gradually intensified over time. Despite facing rejections from his female classmates, Liu interpreted their responses as signs of shyness rather than lack of interest.

Liu's Misconception

In an interview with Dr. Lu Zhenjiao from Huai’an No. 3 People’s Hospital, as reported by the South China Morning Post (SCMP), Liu expressed his belief that all the girls in school liked him. According to Dr. Lu's statement to local media outlet Litchi News, Liu also held the perception that he was the most attractive individual in the university. This delusion led to disruptive behavior affecting his schoolmates.

Understanding the Disorder's Causes

Dr. Lu explained that delusional love disorder is often observed during the transition from March to April, attributed to fluctuations in endocrine levels due to weather changes. Individuals with this disorder may experience heightened emotions, sleep disturbances, and potential complications like sex addiction. In severe cases, patients may exhibit aggressive tendencies.

Liu's Treatment and Recovery

Following his diagnosis, Liu received a combination of drug therapy and psychotherapy to address his condition. As of now, he is reported to be in recovery, showing positive progress under medical supervision.
