Chakshu: New portal to help report fraud calls, messages; know how it works

Chakshu will enable citizens to report suspected fraudulent communications received through phone, SMS, or WhatsApp with the intention of defrauding.

In a significant move to curb fraudulent activities for mobile users, the government has launched 'Chakshu', which will help them report suspected fraud activities over call, SMS or WhatsApp. 

Minister of Communications, Railway, and Electronics & Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw, while launching the portal announced that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT)’s ‘Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP)’ for coordination among the stakeholders to curb misuse of telecom resources in cyber-crime and financial frauds, and ‘Chakshu’ facility on Sanchar Saathi portal (https://sancharsaathi.gov.in). 

The Department of Telecommunications has recently added Chakshu to its list of citizen-centric services on the Sanchar Saathi portal. These services enable citizens to report suspected fraudulent communications received through phone, SMS, or WhatsApp with the intention of defrauding, such as the expiration of their KYC or updates to their bank account, payment wallet, SIM, gas or electricity connection, sextortion, posing as a government official or a relative in order to send money, the Department of Telecommunications disconnecting all mobile numbers, etc.

In the official press release, the government has advised that those who have already fallen victim to financial fraud or cybercrime report the incident to the Government of India's https://www.cybercrime.gov.in website or by calling the cybercrime hotline at 1930.

Vishnaw also disclosed that a total 59 lakhs fraudulent connections and over 1 crore of mobile connections have been disconnected in past nine months, as an outcome of various initiatives of DoT.

He also encouraged the citizens to proactively report suspected fraud communications on Sanchar Saathi to help DoT in prevention of misuse of telecom resources for cyber-crime and financial fraud.
