The Central Government in the recent directive has asked all the states to ban the sale and breeding of ‘ferocious’ dog breeds. The list has 23 breeds which include Pitbull Terrier, American Bulldog, Rottweiler and more. The decision has come after recent instances of people dying due to attacks by dogs.

However, the ban does not target the existing breeds of these dogs. According to the sources, the ban has been directed to all the states and union territories.

In the official letter dated March 12 to chief secretaries of all states and UTs, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying said that people who are keeping them as pets should be sterilized to prevent further breeding.

The 23 dog breeds that have been banned are Pitbull Terrier, Tosa Inu, American Staffordshire Terrier, Fila Brasileiro, Dogo Argentino, American Bulldog, Boerboel Kangal, Central Asian Shepherd Dog, Caucasian Shepherd Dog, South Russian Shepherd Dog, Tornjak, Sarplaninac, Japanese Tosa and Akita, Mastiffs, Terriers, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Wolf Dogs, Canario, Akbash Dog, Moscow Guard Dog, Cane Corso and Bandog.

The direction from the government aims to protect human life and further prevent dog attack instances. Apart from this, the step will also promote responsible pet ownership and ensure the welfare of both humans and animals.

Local bodies will issue all the necessary guidelines for the implementation of the ban.
