On Sunday, heavy rainfall in Muradabad district, Uttar Pradesh, led to severe flooding in several parts of the city, forcing residents of Bholanath Colony to use boats as the area was completely submerged. The Regional Meteorological Center in New Delhi predicted thunderstorms with light to moderate intensity rain for the western region of Uttar Pradesh during the day on Sunday, according to social media reports.

Thunderstorm Alerts Issued

In a post on social media platform X, the Regional Meteorological Center stated: “05:15 IST; Thunderstorms with light to moderate intensity rain will occur over and around Jattari, Khair, Aligarh, Iglas, Sikandrarao, and Hathras (UP) during the next 2 hours.” The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for widespread rain and thunderstorms in many parts of the country on Sunday. Recent satellite images indicate the presence of convective clouds, suggesting the likelihood of light to moderate rainfall in several locations. In an update on the southwest monsoon, the IMD mentioned:

“The monsoon has advanced into the remaining parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh and some more parts of western Uttar Pradesh as of June 29, 2024. The northern limit of the monsoon now passes through 26°N/65°E, Jaisalmer, Churu, Bhiwani, Delhi, Aligarh, Hardoi, Muradabad, Una, Pathankot, Jammu, and 33°N/74°E. Conditions are favorable for the southwest monsoon to advance further into the remaining parts of western Rajasthan, some more parts of Haryana-Chandigarh, Punjab, western Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and the remaining parts of Jammu over the next 2-3 days.” Amritsar also experienced heavy rainfall on Sunday, resulting in waterlogging in various parts of the city.
