The CEO of X, formerly known as Twitter, has confirmed in an interview that the platform will soon feature video calls as part of its evolution into what Elon Musk envisions as an ‘everything app’.

X CEO Linda Yaccarino, in an interview with the American news channel CNBC, affirmed that video calling support will be integrated into the platform soon. According to Yaccarino, this upcoming feature will enable X users to “make video chat calls without having to give your phone number to anyone on the platform”. She also emphasised the clear delineation of roles between herself and Musk, stating that she holds the ‘autonomy’ to lead the company.

This move is in line with Musk’s strategy to transform X into a versatile platform offering various functionalities. The upcoming video calling feature will allow users to initiate video chat calls without the need to share their phone numbers, relying instead on usernames like Facebook and Instagram.

Notably, a month ago, X employee Andrea Conway shared two screenshots showcasing what seems to be the user interface of X’s video calling feature on iOS. One screenshot displays a phone receiver icon in the top-right corner of a direct messages chat, accompanied by a pop-up menu presenting options for audio and video calls. The second screenshot reveals the video calling screen layout, featuring buttons for speaker, mute, video, and ending the call.

While Conway’s shared screenshots are more than one month old, suggesting potential UI adjustments before launch, X users can anticipate a new way to connect via video calls. However, neither Yaccarino nor Conway disclosed the anticipated rollout date for this feature.

X video calling part of various new updates under Elon Musk

Although X’s direct messages (DMs) currently support voice messages, the upcoming video-calling option will introduce an entirely new facet. X Spaces, a feature reminiscent of the Clubhouse social audio app, currently offers live conversations on the platform, but its public nature isn’t ideal for private one-on-one interactions.

Elon Musk had previously mentioned the introduction of calling functionality in May, saying, “Coming soon will be voice and video chat from your handle to anyone on this platform, so you can talk to people anywhere in the world without giving them your phone number.”

In addition to these updates, X recently announced its decision to lower the eligibility threshold for revenue sharing with creators on the platform. Users with an X Premium subscription who fulfil the requirements can receive minimum payouts of $10 (about ₹830), a reduction from the previous minimum of $50 (about ₹4,100), in alignment with the platform’s ongoing developments.
