Elon Musk’s SpaceX has been rapidly expanding its satellite internet service, Starlink, across the globe, bringing high-speed connectivity to remote and underserved regions. While Starlink is now operational in over 100 countries, including neighboring Bhutan, its entry into India remains uncertain due to regulatory and security concerns. But if it does get the green light, what can Indian users expect in terms of pricing, speed, and availability?

How Starlink works

Unlike traditional broadband that relies on fiber-optic cables or cellular towers, Starlink operates through a network of low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. As of early 2024, SpaceX has deployed nearly 7,000 satellites, with plans to continuously upgrade them every five years.

How the connection is established:

  1. A Starlink dish and router are required to access the network.
  2. The dish automatically aligns with the nearest satellite cluster, ensuring stable internet connectivity.
  3. While primarily designed for stationary use, Starlink also offers hardware for mobile connectivity in vehicles, boats, and aircraft.
  4. Potential Starlink Plans and Pricing in India

Although official pricing for India hasn’t been announced, Starlink’s recent launch in Bhutan provides a useful benchmark. Here’s what Indian users might expect:

Bhutan’s Starlink plans

  • Residential lite plan: Rs 3,000/month – Speed: 23 Mbps to 100 Mbps (Best for browsing, social media, and video streaming)
  • Standard Residential Plan: Rs 4,200/month – Speed: 25 Mbps to 110 Mbps (Supports gaming, HD streaming, and video calls with unlimited data)

If Starlink enters India, its pricing could be slightly higher due to a 30% tax on foreign digital services. Estimates suggest plans could start around Rs 3,500- Rs 4,500 per month, making it a premium option compared to existing fiber broadband providers.

Will Starlink outperform traditional broadband in India?

Starlink’s low-Earth orbit satellites significantly reduce latency (25-50 ms) compared to traditional satellite internet (600+ ms). This makes it ideal for online gaming, video conferencing, and high-definition streaming. However, fiber-optic broadband from providers like JioFiber and Airtel Xstream still offers faster speeds at a lower cost, particularly in urban areas.

Where Starlink could make a major impact is in rural and remote regions where fiber and mobile networks struggle with connectivity issues. If approved, it could complement existing internet infrastructure and bridge the digital divide.

Will Starlink launch in India soon?

While India remains on hold, neighboring countries like Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar have already rolled out Starlink services. The final decision depends on government approvals, security clearances, and how Starlink positions itself in the Indian broadband market. If and when it launches, it could revolutionize internet access in rural India
