WhatsApp has announced that they’re getting support of passwordless login using passkeys on Android. This means that users can log in to the app using biometrics like face, fingerprints, or a PIN during the initial setup.

WhatsApp has posted on X, “Android users can easily and securely log back in with passkeys only your face, finger print, or pin unlocks your WhatsApp account.”
It should be noted that the feature was already accessible to beta testers last month in September, thus it was just a matter of time until it became accessible to all users. Of course, Android users are now receiving it.
This is in response to Google’s recent request that users create passkeys for quick and passwordless logins.
Despite this development, Google recognised that it takes time for new technologies to be adopted, thus conventional passwords might still be used for a while. Google added support for passkeys earlier this year, and it was well-received because it made accessing online accounts easier and more secure.
In conclusion, the launch of WhatsApp’s password-free passkey functionality for Android users is a big step towards improved account authentication security and ease.
