Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp had pulled out new updates supporting HD images, but now it supports HD videos as well.

Previously all videos shared through WhatsApp were compressed, which resulted in recipients viewing them in lesser resolution. While this has the advantage of faster file transmission and less bandwidth and storage usage, the messaging app will now give users the option to send videos in high definition.

More on the update

WhatsApp rolled out the new update 2.23.17.74 on Thursday, the app now displays an HD icon at the top of the screens when selecting a video to share with contacts. When this is toggled, WhatsApp will allow users to share videos in 720p resolution instead of the standard and default 480p resolution. The new function prevents video compression and allows consumers to share videos in 1280×720 pixels resolution.

Here’s a catch

WhatsApp still has the default version to send videos in a faster approach and if the users want to share media in HD mode, they will have to select the quality of the video before sending, which will increase the size of the file, quality. However, it will take a little longer to reach the other users as compared to the standard quality.
