Meta Platform’s popular instant messaging app WhatsApp has introduced a forwarding message feature for its channels on both Android and iOS platforms, the company announced on Wednesday.

The announcement was made through the official channel of WhatsApp, revealing that users can now share messages from channels with their contacts, as reported by technology website WABetaInfo.

To make use of this new functionality, users simply need to tap on a message and select the ‘forward’ action. This advancement empowers WhatsApp to equip channel creators with a powerful tool to broaden their audience and attract new followers. Forwarded messages will include a fresh entry point to the channel, enabling recipients to effortlessly follow the channel by selecting ‘View channel’.

The feature is similar to the ‘shares’ feature offered by rival messaging app Telegram.

WhatsApp channel fowarding feature to be released worldwide soon

This feature is currently available to a limited group of users who have updated their WhatsApp applications to the latest versions on iOS via the App Store and on Android via the Play Store. The rollout of this feature will gradually expand to include more users in the upcoming days.

In a similar vein, last month saw WhatsApp extending its channels feature to an additional seven countries, including Egypt, Chile, Malaysia, Morocco, Ukraine, Kenya, and Peru. Channels function as a one-way broadcast medium, allowing administrators to disseminate various forms of content such as text, photos, videos, stickers, and polls to their audiences.

Earlier reports had hinted at WhatsApp’s ongoing development of a message reaction feature tailored for channels. This functionality is expected to be incorporated within a newly introduced ‘Channel settings’ section, providing administrators with the capability to manage various options for their channels. Admins might soon have the power to control the types of reactions that users can send to the channel.
