Apple unveiled iOS 17.5 in anticipation of the forthcoming WWDC 2024, where the company is expected to reveal iOS 18. This recent OS iteration follows a beta phase that commenced in early April 2024 and is now accessible for installation on select iPhone models.
iOS 17.5, while not introducing groundbreaking features, is set to enhance the News app's security aspects significantly. Additionally, users in the European market will now have access to third-party apps from sources beyond Apple's App Store, in compliance with EU regulations.
Expanding on iOS 14.5's functionality that notifies users of unknown AirTags or Find My network accessories, iOS 17.5 extends this capability to other Bluetooth-based tracking devices. Users will receive alerts if such devices are detected moving with them, ensuring cross-platform security.
Subscribers to Apple News Plus will benefit from new additions, including the tile-based word game Quartiles (available in the U.S. and Canada) and an offline mode for downloading articles, games, and audio reports, enabling offline access without an internet connection.
iOS 17.5 streamlines app access for EU residents, allowing developers to offer apps directly from their websites after undergoing a verification process and agreeing to Apple's terms. This process simplifies app downloads and enhances user accessibility.
