Cab services company Uber has unveiled a new feature called ‘Group Rides’ in India, designed to present users with economical travel alternatives by enabling passengers to pool rides with up to three companions who share a common destination.

By opting for ‘Group Rides’, passengers can potentially slash up to 30% off their fare, based on the number of co-riders they accompany, the ride-hailing company said.

“With Group Rides we are offering customers the option to save more while they are riding with people they know. Not only do riders save money and arrive at the common destination together, they also do the good deed of reducing vehicles on the road by getting more butts in fewer cars,” Nitish Bhushan, Director of Central Operations at Uber India, said in an official statement.

This new feature integrates into users’ routines, allowing them to effortlessly include friends in their Uber trips. Ride details can be shared through messaging platforms, streamlining the process. As friends join the ride, they can input their specific pickup points, which are then seamlessly integrated into the journey.

Uber’s new ‘Group Rides’ feature aimed at reducing traffic congestion

Beyond the financial benefits, the ‘Group Rides’ innovation addresses the broader issue of traffic congestion. By facilitating groups of friends, colleagues, or family members to share rides towards a mutual endpoint, Uber’s aim is to curtail the necessity for multiple individual vehicles on the road.

To access the ‘Group Rides’ feature, users would need to update their Uber app. After opening the app, users would need to tap on the Group Ride icon to initiate a request. The app then guides users through the booking procedure, including inviting friends to join the ride through a shared link and permitting them to incorporate additional stops along the route.

Uber further highlighted that the introduction of Group Rides doesn’t have any adverse impact on driver earnings. Drivers will continue to receive compensation that corresponds with the route they undertake. This ensures their income remains consistent with that of Uber Go or Uber Premier rides.
