Following a recent modification to a policy, many prominent Bollywood celebrities, including Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, and Alia Bhatt, as well as politicians such as Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi, and cricketers such as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, have had their verified blue check marks removed from their Twitter accounts.

Taking a dig on the same, Amitabh Bachchan took to Twitter and wrote that now he has submitted the required amount, Twitter should apply the blue tick again to his social networking account. Big B, in his familiar ‘Allahabadi’ tone, requested Twitter:

The change has also impacted several well-known journalists and prominent individuals, and they will need to subscribe to Twitter Blue in order to get back their verified status. Beyonce, Pope Francis, Oprah Winfrey, and former President of the United States, Donald Trump, were among those who lost their blue checkmarks on Thursday.

According to Twitter’s new policy, only individual Twitter users who purchase the premium Twitter Blue service can keep their verified status. The Twitter Blue subscription costs USD 8 per month when purchased through the web and USD 11 when purchased through the in-app payment on iOS and Android.

What is Twitter’s blue tick mark, and why they changed the policy?

The verified blue checkmark was originally used to protect popular personalities against impersonation, as well as to prevent the spread of misinformation. Twitter stated in March on their official account that they would be discontinuing their old verified scheme and deleting the associated checkmarks. Users might keep their blue checkmarks after April 1st by upgrading to Twitter Blue.

Twitter developed the blue checkmark system in 2009 to distinguish between legitimate accounts of public personalities, politicians, companies, brands, news organisations, and other notable individuals. Prior to this latest adjustment, there were no fees for the verification procedure. Musk established Twitter Blue and added the verified checkmark symbol as one of the premium advantages two weeks after acquiring the company last year.

Who still has the blue tick marks?

Many celebrities, corporate leaders, and politicians have kept their verified status on Twitter by subscribing to Twitter Blue or being linked with a verified organisation. For example, Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma and Apple CEO Tim Cook have paid for subscriptions and verified their phone numbers to maintain their verified status. Jeff Bezos, the creator of Amazon, has a verified account on Twitter because it is associated with Amazon. Interestingly, Elon Musk is currently paying for several people’s Twitter Blue subscriptions, including Canadian actor William Shatner, NBA star LeBron James, and novelist Stephen King, all of whom have previously expressed dissatisfaction with Musk’s decision to charge for verification.
